Gratis is a small Ohio farming community of 725 people near the Indiana border. US Route 35 runs right through town, connecting to Dayton (25 miles east) and Richmond, Indiana (20 miles west). State Route 503 provides north-south access to other Preble County towns. The village got its unusual name from the Latin word for "free" because early settlers received their land grants without payment.
