Golconda sits on the Ohio River in southern Illinois, right at the Kentucky border. Take Route 146 east from I-24 near Vienna, or follow it west from the Kentucky side. The town of 700 runs one of the last free ferries across the Ohio River, connecting directly to Smithland, Kentucky during daylight hours.
