Gilcrest is a farming town of about 1,000 people in Weld County, 50 miles north of Denver via US 85 and Highway 52. It sits on flat prairie land along the South Platte River, surrounded by corn and sugar beet fields. The town still operates one of Colorado's few remaining sugar beet processing plants, where huge piles of harvested beets stack up like small mountains each autumn.
