Gilbert is a small Appalachian town of 300 people in Mingo County, accessible via US Route 119 and State Route 65 through winding mountain roads. The nearest interstate is I-64, about 45 miles north through Logan. Surrounded by steep, forested ridges along the Tug Fork River, it's primarily reached by regional traffic from West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. The town houses the Mingo County Sheriff's Department headquarters in a notably modern facility.
