Gilbert is a small Iron Range city of 1,700 people located on US Highway 169 between Virginia and Eveleth. The town sits amid northeastern Minnesota's forested terrain, experiencing harsh winters and mild summers typical of the region. Highway 169 connects Gilbert to Virginia 5 miles south and continues north toward Ely, while State Highway 37 heads east to Hibbing. The massive Thunderbird Mine operates along the town's eastern border.
