Gas is a tiny southeastern Kansas town of 512 people on US Highway 169, about 20 miles south of Iola near the Oklahoma border. Named after natural gas discoveries in the early 1900s, it sits on rolling prairie land typical of the region. The main route is US-169, which connects Kansas City to Oklahoma and provides access from Iola to the north or Chanute to the northeast. The town features a restored vintage Phillips 66 station that serves as both a working gas station and roadside landmark.
