Gardner sits at Routes 2 and 140 in north-central Massachusetts, about 60 miles northwest of Boston. Route 2 carries traffic between Boston and the Berkshires, while Route 140 connects Worcester to New Hampshire. The rolling, forested terrain reaches over 1,000 feet elevation in places. Gardner Municipal Airport serves general aviation just northeast of downtown. The city was once known as "Chair City" for its massive 19th-century furniture industry.
