Gardiner is a small river city in central Maine, just 8 miles south of Augusta on US Route 201. The town sits where the Kennebec River narrows, which made it a major lumber and ice-harvesting center in the 1800s. Most visitors arrive via Route 201 from Augusta or Route 9 from I-95. The triangular Gardiner Common downtown is surrounded by impressive Victorian-era brick buildings.
