Gardendale is a Birmingham suburb in north Jefferson County, easily reached via I-65 Exit 271 about 15 miles from downtown. The city sits in the Appalachian foothills with a population around 16,500. Most visitors arrive from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, 25 miles southeast. The community was named for the vegetable gardens early settlers grew in the area's fertile soil.
