Galena is an isolated Alaskan community of 600 people along the Yukon River, accessible only by plane or boat since no roads reach the town. Most visitors fly into Edward G. Pitka Sr Airport from Fairbanks or Anchorage. The airport doubles as a military training facility and can handle large transport aircraft during Alaska National Guard exercises.
