Fruitland is a small Eastern Shore city just west of Salisbury, connected by US Route 13. The main route to Ocean City runs right through town, making it a gateway to Maryland's beaches about 30 miles southeast. Most residents commute the short distance to Salisbury for work, while summer brings beach traffic through the area. The city earned its name from historic fruit orchards, and peach trees still grow in many neighborhoods today.
