Fort Yates is a small town of about 100 people along the Missouri River in south-central North Dakota, serving as headquarters for the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Highway 24 runs through town, connecting north to Highway 1806 and Bismarck (60 miles), while I-94 provides the main long-distance access route. The town sits in rolling prairie with a continental climate of snowy winters and warm summers. Fort Yates is home to Sitting Bull's grave, marked by a granite monument honoring the famous Lakota leader.
