Fort Jones is a small mountain town of 562 people in northern California's Scott Valley, reached via Highway 3 from Yreka (17 miles north) or Weaverville (60 miles south). The area sits at 2,740 feet elevation with snowy winters and dry summers. Most long-distance travelers come from Interstate 5 through Yreka, while locals use Highway 3 for daily trips. The original 1860s military fort's powder magazine still stands downtown.
