Fort Irwin is a massive Army training base in the Mojave Desert, 37 miles northeast of Barstow via I-40 and Fort Irwin Road. Take I-15 to Barstow from either LA or Vegas, then head east to the Fort Irwin Road exit. The National Training Center here spans 1,000 square miles of desert where soldiers practice large-scale combat exercises. The base uses high-tech laser tag systems on military vehicles for realistic war games without live rounds.
