Forest City is a tiny Mason County community of about 200 people, located 25 miles northwest of Peoria via Route 97. Most visitors arrive from Springfield or Chicago using I-55 to Route 136 west, then Route 97 north through rolling farmland. The town sits near several creeks that flow into the Illinois River, creating small wetlands that draw migrating waterfowl during spring and fall migrations.
