Folly Beach is a narrow barrier island 12 miles southeast of Charleston, reached via Folly Road (SC-171) from downtown in about 25 minutes. The drive crosses marshland and offers river views before reaching this laid-back beach town. The island stretches six miles long but only half a mile wide, ending at the historic Morris Island Lighthouse that now stands in the water due to erosion.
