Florence anchors northwest Alabama's Shoals region along the Tennessee River, connected by I-65 running north to Nashville (115 miles) and south to Birmingham (120 miles). US Highway 72 provides the main east-west route through town, linking to Huntsville and Memphis. The University of North Alabama dominates the city center, and Wesleyan Hall's 1856 clock tower still keeps time as one of Alabama's oldest continuously operating timepieces.
