Flatwoods is a small West Virginia town of 319 people positioned right where Interstate 79 crosses the Elk River in Braxton County. Most folks arrive via I-79 Exit 67, about 45 miles northeast of Charleston and 90 miles south of Morgantown. The town got its name from the rare flat bottomland along the Elk River, some of the only level ground early settlers could find for farming in this mountainous part of Appalachia.
