Flatwoods sits along the Ohio River in northeastern Kentucky, connected to Ohio by the modern Russell-Flatwoods Bridge on US Route 23. Interstate 64 runs just south of town, making it easily accessible from Lexington and Louisville, while Route 23 connects north to Huntington and south into Appalachian coal country. The city serves as a commuter hub for the tri-state area, with daily traffic flowing between Kentucky and Ohio. The 2019 cable-stayed bridge replaced a Depression-era suspension span and features distinctive twin towers that dominate the river valley skyline.
