Fertile is a small farming town in northwestern Minnesota's Red River Valley, about 25 miles from the North Dakota border. Highway 32 runs north-south through town, connecting to Crookston 15 miles south, while Highway 9 heads east-west toward Ada and Grand Forks. The area's flat prairie landscape was formed by ancient glacial lake beds, creating incredibly fertile farmland. The town's grain elevator towers above the surrounding fields, visible for miles across the prairie as a distinctive landmark.
