Fairfield is an old steel town just 8 miles west of Birmingham, easily reached via Interstate 20/59 or US Highway 11. The city sits in Alabama's rolling hills with a humid subtropical climate and hot summers. Most visitors arrive from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport (15 miles northeast) or drive the I-20/59 corridor between Atlanta and Mississippi. The town was built by U.S. Steel in 1910, and you can still see the original company houses arranged in numbered rows along the grid streets.
