Fairfax is a farming town of about 1,100 people in south-central Minnesota, 90 miles southwest of Minneapolis. Take Highway 212 west from the Twin Cities to Highway 14, then continue west. The town sits at the intersection of Highways 14 and 19, making it a natural stopping point for travelers crossing southern Minnesota's agricultural region. Fairfax still operates one of the state's last independent phone companies, dating back to 1905.
