Fairburn is a tiny community of 61 people in southwestern South Dakota's grasslands, about 45 miles southwest of Rapid City. US Highway 18 runs right through town, connecting west to Hot Springs in 15 minutes and east toward Interstate 83. Highway 79 provides north-south access through scenic Black Hills foothills. The town's 1936 stone post office is a rare surviving WPA-era building in the region.
