Excel is a small Monroe County town in Alabama's pine woods, accessible via State Route 136 about 15 miles west of Interstate 65. Most visitors exit I-65 at Evergreen and follow Route 83 to Route 136, while regional travelers use State Route 21 from Monroeville. The Monroe County Aeroplex Airport serves private aircraft nearby. Excel sits along the historic Federal Road, the early 1800s route that connected Georgia to the Mississippi Territory.
