Escobares is a small border town in South Texas, three miles from Mexico in the Rio Grande Valley. Take US Highway 83 to Farm Road 649 south to reach this community of 2,500 people. The town sits on flat river bottomlands with a subtropical climate. Most visitors arrive from McAllen (45 miles east) or Laredo (60 miles west) via US 83. The town still operates a hand-pulled cable ferry across the Rio Grande to Mexico.
