Escalante is a small Utah town of 604 people that sits along scenic Highway 12 in red rock country. It's the main base for exploring Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, positioned about 50 miles between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef national parks. Most visitors arrive via Highway 12 from either park, or from Interstate 70 near Torrey. The town's 1930s movie theater on Main Street still shows weekend films and doubles as a local history museum.
