Erwin sits in Tennessee's Appalachian foothills along the Nolichucky River, connected by US 23 north to Johnson City and south toward Asheville. Most visitors use I-26 access via Johnson City for Blue Ridge Parkway trips, while locals travel the 20-mile commute on US 23. The town famously hanged a circus elephant in 1916 after it killed its trainer.
