Elkhart is a small farming town of 1,600 people in far southwestern Kansas, sitting right on US Highway 56 near the Oklahoma border. The main routes are US-56 running east-west (connecting to Dodge City and Colorado) and State Highway 27 heading north-south to Liberal. It's a classic High Plains community with wide wheat fields and big skies, serving as a fuel stop for cross-country travelers. The Morton County Historical Museum displays an original Santa Fe Trail marker from when the famous wagon route passed through town.
