Elkhart is a small farming town of about 900 people in central Iowa, roughly 20 miles northeast of Des Moines via I-35 and local roads through Ankeny. Highway 69 runs north-south through the area, connecting it to Ames and the capital region. The town sits in classic Iowa farmland with corn and soybean fields stretching in all directions. Its working 1920s grain elevator still dominates the skyline.
