Elk Rapids is a small lakeside town on Grand Traverse Bay, reached via US-31 from Traverse City (15 miles south) or Petoskey (30 miles north). The town sits where the Elk River meets the bay, making it a popular stop on the Lake Michigan Circle Tour. You can still see the massive stone ruins of the old Elk Rapids Iron Company blast furnace near the harbor.
