Elgin is a small farming town in northeastern Oregon's Grande Ronde Valley, home to about 1,500 residents. Most visitors drive 18 miles northwest from La Grande via Highway 82, which continues west toward the Wallowa Mountains. The town sits surrounded by hay fields and cattle ranches in high desert country. Elgin operates one of Oregon's smallest critical access hospitals, serving the scattered rural communities of this remote region.
