Elgin lies 40 miles northwest of Chicago along the Fox River, accessible via I-90 and US Route 20. The city connects to nearby suburbs through Routes 25 and 31, which follow the scenic river valley. Most long-distance visitors drive from Chicago in about an hour, while local routes serve daily commuters heading to Schaumburg or the western suburbs. The restored 1920s Hemmens Cultural Center houses both the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and an original Wurlitzer theater organ.
