Elaine is a small delta farming town of 487 people in Phillips County, about 70 miles southwest of Memphis. Highway 1 runs through town, connecting to Interstate 40 via Highway 49 from Brinkley. The town sits on Mississippi River floodplain with rich soil but limited services. Elaine was the site of the 1919 Elaine Race Massacre, one of the deadliest racial violence incidents in U.S. history.
