El Reno sits 25 miles west of Oklahoma City along I-40, making it a natural stop for cross-country travelers. The city developed as a railroad junction and highway crossroads where I-40 meets US 81. Most visitors arrive via I-40 from Oklahoma City or points west, while US 81 connects north-south traffic through central Oklahoma. El Reno claims to be the birthplace of the fried onion burger, invented during the Depression when cooks mixed onions into beef patties to stretch the meat.
