El Chaparral is a tiny Starr County community of under 300 people, located about 15 miles northwest of Rio Grande City in South Texas ranch country. Reach it via US 83 west from the Rio Grande Valley, then north on county roads through mesquite and agricultural land. The town's name comes from the dense chaparral brush that originally covered this borderland terrain.
