Dyer is a small Arkansas farming town about 20 miles southwest of Fort Smith, reached via I-40 Exit 7 and Highway 162 south. The drive from Fort Smith takes locals along US 271 to Highway 162 through cattle country and hay fields. Long-distance visitors usually come via I-40 from Little Rock, about 140 miles east. The town hosts an annual Watermelon Festival each July with seed-spitting contests and fresh local watermelon.
