Dowell is a small Jackson County community of about 300 people in southern Illinois, reachable via I-57 Exit 40. The town sits between Carbondale (15 miles east) and Murphysboro (10 miles northeast) on local roads connecting to State Route 13. Most long-distance travelers use I-57 for trips to St. Louis or Memphis. The area features several small creek crossings that flow toward the Big Muddy River.
