Dortches is a small Nash County town of about 1,100 people, located 50 miles northeast of Raleigh and 15 miles from Rocky Mount. Highway 4 runs through town, connecting to US 64 for access to larger cities. The area features typical Coastal Plain terrain with mild winters and hot summers. The community was named after the Dortch family plantation and still has an active Norfolk Southern railway line running through it.
