Donora is a small river town about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River. Most people drive Route 837 south from Pittsburgh through the Mon Valley, passing old steel towns along the scenic riverside route. The 1948 smog disaster here killed 20 people and led to the first federal clean air laws.
