Dexter is a small farming town 12 miles south of Roswell on US 285, serving as a quiet stop between Roswell and Carlsbad Caverns country. The highway connects directly to Roswell Air Center Airport about 15 miles north. Set in irrigated Pecos River Valley farmland, the town of 1,100 is home to the historic Dexter National Fish Hatchery, one of the Southwest's oldest federal trout hatcheries from 1931.
