Detroit is a tiny mountain community of 110 people along Highway 22 in Oregon's Cascades, about 50 miles east of Salem. It sits beside Detroit Lake, a popular recreation spot created by Detroit Dam. The scenic drive from Portland takes 90 minutes via I-5 south to Highway 22 east. During late fall drawdowns, the lake reveals dramatic mudflats and the original river channel beneath.
