Des Lacs is a small farming community of 163 people located 15 miles northwest of Minot via US Highway 52. The town sits on rolling North Dakota prairie and experiences typical continental weather with harsh winters and warm summers. Most traffic consists of residents commuting to Minot for work and services, plus agricultural vehicles serving the surrounding farmland. The town's name comes from French explorers who noted the chain of small glacial lakes scattered throughout the area.
