Demopolis lies along the Tombigbee River in west-central Alabama, accessible via US 80 and US 43. The French exiles who founded it in 1817 named it "city of the people," and you can still see their influence in the historic Gaineswood mansion, one of Alabama's finest examples of Greek Revival architecture.
