DeKalb is a college town about 65 miles west of Chicago, anchored by Northern Illinois University. Take I-88 west to Exit 42 or 44 to reach campus and downtown. The city sits in prime corn country with flat farmland stretching in all directions. It's known as the birthplace of barbed wire, invented here in 1873.
