Deering is a remote Inupiat village on Alaska's northwest coast, accessible only by small aircraft through Deering Airport or seasonal barge service. No roads connect it to anywhere else in Alaska. The community of 227 residents sits where the Inmachuk River meets Kotzebue Sound, about 57 miles from Kotzebue. Mail delivery here depends entirely on weather and flight schedules, sometimes leaving the post office without service for weeks during winter storms.
