Deerfield is a tiny rural community in western Missouri near the Kansas border, home to just 43 residents. Take Highway 54 west from Nevada (the county seat 20 miles northeast) to reach this farming area of rolling hills and pastures. Most visitors arrive via Interstate 49 from Kansas City, about 100 miles north, then head west through Nevada. Old coal mining equipment still rusts in nearby fields from the early 1900s mining operations.
