De Smet, a prairie town of about 1,000 people, sits along US Highway 14 in eastern South Dakota's farm country. The town connects west to Huron and east toward Minnesota, with State Highway 25 providing north-south access to Interstate 90. Most famous as Laura Ingalls Wilder's childhood home, De Smet inspired five Little House books and maintains several historic sites related to the beloved author.
