Dayton is a small county seat in southeastern Washington's wheat country, about 30 miles northeast of Walla Walla via Highway 12. The town sits in rolling Palouse farmland with a semi-arid climate. State Route 261 connects north-south through town, while Highway 12 provides the main east-west route to Walla Walla and Lewiston, Idaho. The 1881 basalt stone courthouse remains one of Washington's oldest continuously operating courthouses.
