Dayton sits along US Highway 90 about 45 miles northeast of Houston, serving as a gateway between the city and East Texas. Most visitors arrive via US 90 from Houston or take Highway 321 south from Interstate 10. The town grew around the railroad and oil industry, with many residents still commuting to nearby refineries. The Old Community Center Museum features a restored 1936 railroad depot with original waiting room benches and working telegraph equipment.
