Cullman sits along Interstate 65 about 50 miles north of Birmingham, where the Appalachian foothills meet Alabama's farm country. Most visitors drive up I-65 from Birmingham or down from Nashville, with US 278 providing the main east-west route through town. The city is famous for Ave Maria Grotto, a remarkable four-acre garden featuring 125 miniature reproductions of world-famous religious sites, all handcrafted by a Benedictine monk.
